Srisasanti Gallery presents Mahendra Yasa: Marga Abstrak, Gede Mahendra Yasa’s fi rst solo exhibition with the gallery. In this exhibition, Mahendra Yasa tries to reconsider painting not as a representation of an image, but to see the presence of the image as a representation of a painting. This exhibition presents 14 new abstract paintings by Mahendra Yasa.
Previously more commonly known for how he merges traditional Balinese art with modern and contemporary painting techniques to depict an imaginative universe complete with tales from Balinese, Indonesian, and global art history, in this solo exhibition Mahendra Yasa experiments and explores a new body of work that consists of abstract paintings.
Mahendra Yasa, in his own words:
“[…] what I am currently researching is the commonly used medium; acrylic, oil, enamel, which are more popular than encaustic. Regarding the search for its content, I’d say now I'm more in-depth, more modernist, or conservative. Abstract art must be practiced, just like philosophy (at the present time).”
The way of painting which is determined by the characteristic properties of materials—especially paint—for Mahendra Yasa, as seen in his abstract paintings in this exhibition, determines what happens on his canvases.
