Srisasanti Gallery presents Paradoxes, Agus TBR’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. In this solo exhibition, Agus TBR presents 12 paintings that represent fragments of his reflections on the various paradoxes and ironies of life that he encounters. The solo exhibition features new bodies of work that include several oil paintings on canvas.
Paradox is a concept that can be found in everyday life: in our relationships, in the decisions we make, and in the way we see the world. Agus TBR looks back at how humans faced conflicts in the past, which directly impacted and shaped the conditions and culture of life today. He also discusses the awareness that emerges in changes of time, both good and bad, which can be considered a sign of what we can face in a future filled with uncertainty.
The visualization of his ideas has driven us through the passage of time in the history of human civilization, from the emergence of awareness about animal welfare, aufklarung, the industrial revolution, capitalism, colonialism, and postmodernism shocks to world disruptions full of uncertainties. At the same time, the puzzles, and idiosyncratic symbols that he depicted represent eastern ideas and values, especially Javanese, from prophecy, fertility, climate cycle, to the origin and ultimate goal of life.
