STEM Projects presents sowww, a group exhibition of 19 young Indonesian artists today. sowww as the title is a combination of a verb and a noun: “sow” and “www”, each of which serves as the main objective and the catalyst that supports the existence of this exhibition. “Sow” represents the gallery’s commitment to discovering, supporting, and promoting new artists. “www”—an abbreviation for the World Wide Web—represents the power of the internet in connecting the artists with the audiences and subsequently, the gallery.
The Internet has made it easier for them to share their works with a global audience and connect with galleries, curators, collectors, and appreciators from around the world. Art institutions such as galleries have also benefited from the internet, where they can use it to discover and scout new artist prospects that have an interesting value—contextually or visually—to showcase for a wider audience.
At the same time, the internet has created new challenges for artists, such as the oversaturation of the art scene that made it multiple times harder for them to stand out and the pressure to create new works that are “unique and never seen before”.
The majority of artists participating in this exhibition “meet” STEM Projects digitally via the internet, where most of them have never collaborated with us before. sowww presents works with diverse themes, issues, and techniques, sowww as an effort to become a platform for participating artists to connect with new audiences.
